Hello,

My boyfriend has been keeping reptiles for 20 years and has got me hooked! Recently, we found out the local reptile rescue in our area closed for financial reasons. After lengthy discussions and research we decided we wanted to find a way to help. We are starting our own rescue on a very small scale with hopes of expanding in the future. I have been searching online for a place to get some support (not financial, just my sanity) and advice. I am really hoping this forum is the place! ...

i have just joing your forum and read the thread on re homing fee's..

I rang my local reptile rescue and was quoted over £300 to rehome any animal with them... i was told they do not just rehome the animal.. you have to buy the complete set up (viv, heat, light, uvb and starter, thermostat, sand) and then they would let you have the reptile..

i told him i have an empty 4ft viv sat ready now and he said he wouldnt let it go unless i bought th set up.. that way he could ensure i was looking ...

A couple of weeks ago the RSPCA brought in a WC agama that had made it's way to the UK via a crate that was shipped from Africa. It had been in this crate approx 2 weeks and looked fine. Tonight I and hubby are dealing with all the reps feeding, cleaning etc and the bloody lil' sod got out and was running around my bedroom, hiding anywhere it could. It took us almost an hour to catch the super fast lizard and we had to catch him by a net of all things. Am knackered after moving everything out ...

The guy had a phobia of snakes and so did his daughter, who's bedroom it had come from. She also had MS so was panick stricken at the thought of a snake in her room and unable to get away from it fast enough. The snake didn't belong to the guy, it was making its way out of his house ...

I could have asked this by pm but I'm putting it here so

Denise, do you have a 'sponsor a reptile scheme' like the zoo? E.g pay £10 or whatever and you do a certificate with the persons name on? The money could go towards feeding and electricity?

Sorry if you already do it but I think it makes it more 'fun' for people that donate and they get a certificate to show for their kindness?

Just a thought x

However today I had an enquiry regarding someone wanting to rehome an iggy we are offering. The rehoming fee is the standard £50 (for two years we was only charging £35), and though appearently keen said that they really may struggle finding the rehoming fee?

OK £50 is £50 and to some it maybe alot. It is to us when paying vet & elec bills for example! Anyway they was ...

Well after 2 and a half hour drive and 105 miles we have just got back from Leeds with the poorly royal python that was listed on RFUK.

The female royal has been previously rescued from an animal abuser that thought it was a good idea to gather his mates around for a snake fighting party. Apparently this guy used to throw one mouse in between two royal pythons for them to fight over. The male, which the guy in Leeds has (Not the abuser), has burns but is recoverying nicely from the kind rescuer ...

Despite my passion for herps since I was a child, I have always been interested in how to care for sick animals too. Anyway about 4 years ago I began some voluntary work at our local wildlife hospital. Caring for foxes, birds of all types, squirrels etc. The founder of the hospital knew of my knowledge I had of reptiles and my passion and asked why I didn't set up my own rescue. Well of course it as simple as that, so I began to look into how to do things correctly. After 12 months of knowing ...

Grass snake causes chaos at warehouse

A GRASS snake caused mass panic at a plumbers' merchant.

One of the warehouses had to be closed at Ashworth's in Higher Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe, for almost six hours when the two-and-a-half foot reptile was discovered by an employee.

The doors were closed and staff were barred from entering the warehouse amid fears it was a rare and poisonous snake which had been brought to England in a shipment of pipes from India.

Two brave employees ...

Should "Rescues" Kill Their rescued animals?

Please answer as thouroughly as possible.

An ongoing debate:

If you call yourself a "rescue" and say that you are not a "shelter" and you cannot (or will not) find homes for the animals you "rescue", should you euthanize those animals?

SHould you be immediately euthanizing animals as soon as you get them because you are not a shelter and cannot house them?

I don't want to give my opinion, yet, to prevent altering the outcome of the answers.
