The criteria for judging the most dangerous snakes

How accurate are they? How long is a piece of string?

The criteria for judging the most dangerous snakes should be simple. In fact only one factor can legitimately be used - human deaths attributed to the specific species. Contributing factors would be the distribution of the species, aggression, venom yield, toxicity of venom, and habits of the snakes.

Obviously a fairly venomous species that is found in vast reaches of the earth will kill more humans than a violently venomous species ...

Cobra Venom

"Neurotoxin is the main lethal component of the cobra venom," Takacs said. "It binds to a receptor on the muscle, therefore preventing the nerve impulses to induce muscle contraction, leading to the cessation of breathing, and death."

The target of cobra neurotoxin, called the acetylcholine receptor, appears to play a role in Parkinson's disease, schizophrenia, and myasthenia gravis, which debilitates the muscles.

Concerning the handling of venomous animals:

While we do not encourage the handling of venomous animals we must also recognize that some members do. These members do so at their own risk and we hope that those who do handle them understand the risk involved.

These member who handle venomous animals, whether it be snakes, true spiders, tarantulas or scorpions and centipedes, document their handling of said creatures through both pictures and posts. This is by all means allowed.

STRIKING NEWS: SNAKE VENOM

It may sound like a bad pun, but some striking news about snake venom is being discovered in the biology labs at Clarke College.

Clarke College Associate Professor of Biology Lon Alterman and sophomore biology major Jamie Slack of Mokena, Ill., are collaborating with a group at North Carolina State University on a project to determine how the chemical composition of snake venom varies throughout the year. Alterman and Slack receive samples of venom collected ...

Black Mamba

Do you want to know just how deadly a black mamba's venom is? Check out our venom fast facts.

How toxic is it?

As little as two drops of venom can kill a person and a mamba can have up to 20 drops of venom in its fangs.

What's in it?

Black mamba venom contains neurotoxins and cardiotoxins. Neurotoxins cause damage to the nervous system, such as parts of the brain controlling motor functions, while cardiotoxins attack the heart.

What are its effects?
