NEW KERALA (India) 25 June 10 Man arrested for killing King Cobra
Aizaw (UNI): A villager, who had proudly posed before the media's cameras along with the carcass of a King Cobra he had killed, has been arrested under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Lalzauva Khiangte (53), a resident of Serchhip district in Mizoram, was arrested on Thursday, for killing a reptile of an endangered species.
After being produced before the court, he was released on bail on condition of furnishing a personal bond of Rs 5,000.
Under the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, the accused is liable to get a punishment of three years imprisonment or a fine of Rs 25,000, a source from the state environment and forest department said.
Thenzawl DFO C Lalbiaka said even though the man claimed to have killed the 7.3 foot long snake in self-defence, his claim was doubtful given the his reported behaviour after he killed the animal. The snake was a female and curled around its eggs when the villager killed it.
Forest officials voiced concern over a misconception that a handsome cash award is offered for killing a snake.
