Common Lizards Empty
PostSubject: Common Lizards   Common Lizards EmptyMon Mar 24, 2008 12:45 am

This year we have already taken in 2 injured common lizards to our rescue centre. Both had been attacked by a cat. The first one, named The Lizard of Oz, had a puncture wound and died shortly after we'd bought some Baytril antibiotic from the vet. The second (Stumpy Erik) had no apparent injuries other than a lost tail. He too died, after a few hours. Could it have been shock? They had UV lighting and a exo-terra heat stone, reptile substrate, bark, rocks and grass to explore in. I intended to keep them, feed them up a few days until the cold wet weather improved, then release if they were ok.
Has anyone any experience of keeping injured British wildlife?

When cats get a hold of things here, if it's anything like that there, they can mess up the animal's insides and you'd never know. It could be anything, if it's anything like it is here. Sorry.

I have experience in keeping british wildlife and not only in reptiles and amphibians. Jan keeping native wildlife you need to be licensed. Any native reptiles that come into the rescue my best advise would be to get them to your local reptile and amphibian conservation group there. They will have experience with these and a vast amount of knowledge. Stress is a major killer in reptiles, particulary when they are WC (Wild Caught). Keeping such WC specimens requires no tanks or vivs... this only adds to the stress. Tubs, hides, newspaper (instead of substrate), quietness, a water source and heat all required until the animal can be taken to someone who is licensed and has the knowledge. I would NEVER use a heat rock! They are no good for reptiles.. they can cause burns, despite them being sold for reptiles.
