Swim With A 5.5m Crocodile At New Reptile Display, Darwin Australia

July 11, 2008

JIM Charles' heart raced when the deadly jaws of a giant saltwater crocodile missed him by only a couple of centimetres.

Mr Charles, aka Mad Jim, was trapped in the "cage of death'' and dropped 4m into a crocodile tank.

Make it snappy ... Jim Charles get up close and personal with Choppa at Darwin's new Crocosaurus Cove.

"It was pretty scary,'' he said.

The 2.8m-high acrylic tube with 4cm thick panes is set to be a highlight at Crocosaurus Cove on Mitchell St.

Mr Charles was one of the first people to experience a 15-minute underwater encounter with Choppa -- a 5.5m saltie which lost its front feet in two separate fights.

"It was pretty amazing -- a good adrenaline rush,'' the maintenance manager said.

"You just feel the power when it hit the cage.

"You wouldn't have a chance.''

Despite the adrenaline kick, Mr Charles said he also learned a valuable lesson.

"Don't swim with crocs -- not without a cage,'' he said.

Crocosaurus Cove is believed to have the largest reptile display in Australia.

More than 100 crocs, 200 fish, 40 turtles and 76 snakes and lizards will be spread out in the three-level building.

The doors are expected to open next week.
