Euthanasia of Reptiles Empty
PostSubject: Euthanasia of Reptiles   Euthanasia of Reptiles EmptyTue Aug 12, 2008 3:34 pm

This is a controversial topic so please keep it friendly!

Euthanasia, the act of killing of hopelessy sick or injured, is believed by some people that the act shouldn't be performed at all regardless of the circumstances. Others feel if its done humanely and to end suffering then it's ok as its part of our role as reptile keepers/ pet owners.

I was talking to someone the other day about Euthanasia of reptiles and they mentioned that rather than go to the vets to put the sick animal to sleep they decapitated the reptile. So this had me wondering what peoples thoughts where towards such methods used for euthanasia such as freezing, decapitating, inhalation of gases, blows to the head or a trip to the vets for an injection of barbiturates. Also would you mind saying which method/s you personally have chosen in the past or which ones you would choose to use if the need ever arose.

Euthanasia by freezing is painful for a reptile as their cells crystallizes while awake and alive. The animal can be put in to a fridge for an hour or two depending on the size and when the animal goes to sleep due to the cold temperature then the freezer.

Yeah I must agree it is thought that freezing is humane but isn't. Hopefully in time people will realise this and stop using this method.

single shot gun, or an air riffle. thats what we used on the farm, never had any problems with it, or using a stun bolt.
