Stupid Idea ???

I don't know if this is really really stupid

But ...

I'm on loads and loads of forums but never come across this idea ...

How about having a snake stud section? If I have a male that is not used for breeding and I feel his sperm is going to waste then I can offer him up for stud for someone who has a female but no male. Arrangements would need to be made about how many hatchlings you both get for example the person with the female will be incubating so they'd have more because they are putting more work in and using extra electricity.

I hope that makes sense and there's probably a reason people don't do this I just can't think of one at the moment

in principle its a good idea, but personally its not, as

what about quarentine, as you may not know the person who wants to borrow/lend you a snake,

also you wont know whether the setups/husbandry is correct,

also the health of the snakes yours or even theres could cross contaminate the other persons,

then ya gotta look at the split, as you wont know whether or not each other will keep to the bargain,

also you have to think about the snake, the person doing the borrowing may be planning a move and want some breedable sized snakes(they borrow, move - you lose contact and a snake)


At the end of the day would you want to up route one of your snake travel 2-300 miles to allow someone to borrow it and it coming back ill, dead or even not coming back aty all.


But if it was something local where you can inspect each others setups, health of snake and come to a decent agreement then its viable

In the past I have been approached about such ideas... usually the breeder wanting the females LOL and not the other way around. It is not something I would do personally unless it was through a very good knowledgable friend who didn't live too far away and I knew how their set up was run. You would then, though despite them having fantastic hubsbandry, still have to quarantine your own snake once it was returned just to be on the safe side.
I have however just taken my female BD to a friends to get serviced by her male and have set up an agreement to suit both parties fairly. But all too often their are many people out there that you may consider as a friend and then they stab you in the back before you know it.

In theory, it's a wonderful idea. It may just be ahead of its time.

no need to think that Tony, as said in principle its a good idea if you want to loan out your snakes then do it to some one you know and can trust.

Yeah makes sense, it's just that I'm not planning on breeding again (well might try boa breeding one day) and it's a shame as I have a proven male snow corn and a male king that's never had his leg over (so to speak )
